If you are wondering how to make a very simple metalsmith project to get you started... well here it is.

A fun tutorial for beginners, on making a metal butterfly.
The metal could be silver, copper, silver plated or even nickel silver.
This butterfly can be used as a pin or as a pendant

Material List:
  • butterfly pattern
  • about 1 inch diameter
  • silver plated metal sheet 0.4 mm width (24 gauge)
  • one 6 mm stone bead
  • silver plated wire 0.6 mm width (22 gauge) 30 cm long
  • silver plated wire 0.6 mm width (22 gauge) 10 cm long
  • 2 silver plated headpins
Tool List:
  • a pair of scissors for metal
  • jewelers hammer and anvil
  • grinding tools
  • a pricker

Vicky, I have not tried metalsmithing yet but this will be the fist project I do. It is so cute!! Thank you for posting it for us!

I like the butterfly but the metal thickness and wire gauge are not accurate. For the sheet it should read 0.4mm not 4mm and for the wire 0.6mm not 6mm. The difference is huge!!!

Thank you Anne for the feedback, I will correct it ASAP.
The measurement in the .pdf file are correct. There was only a problem in the materials listed in the site because i was using a comma separator instead of a dot
